How Do I Build Leadership in Others?

In Unleash Your Team’s Potential through Coaching™, you will learn how to intentionally develop your team members so that they can lead themselves. You will move from telling team members how to solve problems to building their leadership capabilities. In this work session you will:

  • Use a feedback approach.
  • Practice key coaching skills.
  • Implement a coaching framework.

Use a feedback approach. You will learn and practice two types of feedback: positive and instructive.

POSITIVE FEEDBACK

Frequent, positive feedback is an important way to inspire great performance, intentionally build team culture, and reinforce team values.

INSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK

Instructive, targeted feedback helps team members see the impact of their current behavior and help correct and improve their performance.

Practice key coaching skills. You will learn and practice three key coaching skills: listening, questioning, and acknowledging.

LISTENING

The first coaching skill is Empathic Listening. This skill develops your ability to listen, truly understand another person’s perspective, and summarize your understanding back to them.

QUESTIONING

Asking good questions is a key coaching skill. Good questions can help people develop their capabilities. This section focuses on three types of coaching questions: clarifying questions, open-ended questions, and insightful questions.

ACKNOWLEDGING

When you use acknowledging responses, you build others’ confidence that they already have the skills and resources to handle the current situation.

Implement the coaching framework. In this section, you will learn how to move from telling others what to do and how to be, to coaching them to discover their own solutions through insight.

THE COACHING FRAMEWORK

The coaching framework is a guide for every important conversation. It includes preparing for the coaching conversation, and clarifies the steps to holding a meaningful coaching conversation.
